Paul and I have been trying to promote camper tourism in Montenegro for several years. I have written a few blog posts about this topic and I often wonder why this tourist segment is lagging behind. We should not forget that Germany and France have around 500 thousand motor homes in use, while that number is more than 100 thousand in the Netherlands. Just imagine: in Croatia, campsites and campgrounds realized more than 19.3 million overnights in 2018, which accounts for 21.5% of the total realized overnights. And in Montenegro? I could not even find the appropriate statistics!
Many Montenegrins still think that camper tourism is equal to poverty and dirtiness. They believe that camper tourists just want to save money on transport and accommodation and that they do not use restaurants and pubs (and what about cruiser passengers?). They don’t understand that traveling by camper van has become a lifestyle, even in the most developed countries of the world: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US… It means escaping from the usual itineraries of mass tourism and, instead of that, discovering the magic of pristine nature, thrilling landscapes and ancient traditions in a completely flexible way.
The number of those camper fans who want to travel to less known, adventurous destinations is constantly growing. Such people want to leave the beaten track and enjoy rolling to wherever the road takes them, sleeping anywhere they want.
They often opt for a small or compact camper van, which is less a house on wheels and more a regular van, converted to resemble a little cabin on the inside. Those couples or singles who want to be close to nature and a simple way of life will confirm that this is the ideal way of exploring a country!
